This past weekend the seminal - and non-existent for the past decade - California hardcore band Portraits Of Past graced the stages of Brooklyn and New York City, exciting closet screamo fans from all boroughs. Along with shows they played earlier in the month in Berkeley and San Francisco, this marked their first time playing together in nearly 13 years. Playing in celebration of the recent release of their complete discography on Ebullition Records, the performances raised questions as to the specter of possibly putting out some new recordings - especially with new songs being performed at the recent shows. In a brief discussion with Impose vocalist Rob Pettersen was quoted as saying:

"We are not sure if other songs will be written or how/if we will release it/them. Nothing is ruled out, however… Our guitarist Rex (Shelverton, of Bellavista and The VUE) does a lot of producing and the new song most likely will be recorded by him when our drummer is back in SF. I will also need to find time to make it out there to record vocals.”

Regardless of their impending future, their present (or recent past as the case may be) is well-documented via these great photos from photographer Meg Clark, who also gave us this first hand account. "There were kids from Baltimore and I'm sure even further there. The band played their entire LP from start to finish as well as most of their other known material, much to the delight of their rabid fans, many of whom had never seen the band live before. And from all the conversations I had with random people, many of whom, like me, had since "moved on" from hardcore and screamo and were simultaneously ecstatic and baffled to find themselves at a dark, smoky, cramped, noisy concert straight out of their most nostalgic teenage memories. Super DIY vegan heroes Ampere (featuring former Orchid guitarist Will Killingsworth) opened, along with Off Minor (composed mostly of ex-Saetia members) and Brooklyn-based Tropic of Nelson."

Also included below is live footage from the show in Brooklyn.

Directed by Carlos Charlie Perez, the video for "Monster!" is filled with still shots of the guys in Fiasco dressed as super heroes hanging out with zombies intertwined with comic-book style graphics (think the "Pow", "Oof" kind from the old Batman series) and a ton of fake blood. Pitchfork described the track as sounding like "the Ventures covering Rachmaninoff," which we know because we were forced to pull the video from their site (it's still not posted on YouTube or anywhere else without the Pitchfork player).

Two of our favorite bands are teaming up this fall for a tour that has many exclaiming, it's about damn time!

High Places just announced their fall plans, which include a record release show in Chicago, a big show at the South St. Seaport and others with Dan Deacon and Yo La Tengo. A couple of weeks ago we tipped you off to Ponytail's dates with Don Caballero and impending European jaunt. But what has our ears dripping with anticipation are the slew of dates the pair will share starting in - of all places - Grinnell, Iowa. Of course this is not the first time they will have played together, but as far as we can recall, it's the first time they will tour extensively on the same bill.

To celebrate we're posting High Places "From Stardust To Sentience" from their forthcoming self-titled Thrilljockey debut and The Tripwire exclusive "7 Souls" from Ponytail's Ice Cream Social.

Unlike most seminal bands, when an artist claims to have been heavily influenced by Wire, you have no idea what the band might sound like. Similarly, when presented with a new Wire release, you have no idea what to expect. Could it be two and a half minute spare punk rock? Perhaps obtuse art-rock that pushes the instrumental and lyrical envelope? Or maybe jarring maniacal electric drill industrial with an overt political bent?

While they traverse the musical map with ease, often veering into uncharted spaces, this is actually why each announcement of a new release from the UK stalwarts is welcome with anticipation and zeal by so many rock music nerds. And such was the reaction to Object 47, Wire's 11th full length release, which thankfully followed the industrial leanings of their previous release, Send, with a totally different noise. Instead of abrasion, the veterans switched their recent trajectory and brought it back to their more ethereal side. Harkening back to the sounds of their classic, "The 15th", Object 47 is lighter and more spacious than Send's claustrophobic intensity by miles. The rhythmic repetition throughout gives a trance like calm to the record that also allows for the stronger tracks, like "Perspex Icon" to stand out. But it is the initial track that sets the bar for the entire record. All bass and groove, "One of Us," will, in time, inspire a new crop of Elastica's, Fischerspooner's and Ministry's. And if it does, luckily, Object 47 is not a bad place to start.

According to a story posted on Variety the studio would not comment on the development and has been mum on recent rumors that there was interest in making another installment of the franchise. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky just wrote "Year One," a comedy that was directed by Ramis. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the films with Ivan Reitman directing both the 1984 original and the sequel that was released in 1989. The close proximity between the writers and original Ghostbuster Ramis is evidence that the ghost chasers have sparked to the idea of returning.

In honor of the news that there may be a new "Ghostbusters" movie, we chose to give you some Huey Lewis And The News. What does Huey and Co. have to do with Ghostbusters you may ask?

Well, if you listen closely to "I Want A New Drug" and the original "Ghostbusters" theme by Ray Parker, Jr. you will hear they actually have a lot to do with each other. So much so that in 1984 and throughout 1985, Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker, Jr. for plagiarism, citing that Parker stole the melody from his 1983 hit. The two parties settled out of court for an undisclosed amount with the understanding that neither parties would discuss the case outside of a press-release that was pre-approved by both parties. In an odd twist of fate, Parker in turn sued Lewis for allegedly breaching the agreement when he mentioned the fact he was paid a settlement sum from the original suit on VH1's "Behind the Music". Ironically, Lewis was approached to compose the main theme song for the movie, but he declined due to his work on the soundtrack for "Back to the Future".

While we would rather only give you the News' "I Want A New Drug" as the Friday Flashback, we feel compelled to offer you both so you can come to your own conclusion.

<BR><BR>Deerhoof continues to be one of the best bands at both marketing themselves and making themselves accessible to their fans. One of the more interesting ways was when they released their entire upcoming album <i>Offend Maggie</i> as sheet music for the <a href="http://deerhoof.cashmusic.org/" target="new">"Fresh Born"</a> experiment, asking fans to cover the new songs before they've had a chance to hear them. Well, now they can hear how close they came to matching the original for at least one of them.

The track "The Tears And Music Of Love" will be the first track on the forthcoming October 7th Kill Rock Stars release. Performed live in Tokyo this past summer, it shows Deerhoof in a "take-no-prisoners mode." I guess that means you won't be held captive by this video? We haven't figured that one out yet, but we can show you the video.

Live - Adele @ Webster Hall | NYC

The most immediately striking thing about Adele's live performance is her profound sense of confidence. Compared to the litany of UK vocalists usually bandied about in the same breath, at 20 years old, the London singer is the same age as her peers, but somehow totally owns her complete onstage persona. Although the popularly defined female British vocalist definitions include everything from cute, charming and precocious as well as powerful, emotive and moving, Adele seems to be the one who in the live setting can deliver all of the above, as well as add her own sense of wholly unique strengths.

This confidence, though, is not just in her presence. While, yes, she does seem more at ease under the bright lights than most, her witty repartee and natural stage banter that seems to have really added to her audience connection are only part of her confident front. Adele oozes musical confidence as well. For one, as much as she is backed by a full band and a string quartet, these side players are always just an aside. The show is about Adele, whether showcasing her on guitar or bass, or just her amazing vocal range, the spotlight is 100% focused on her as is the audeince. Secondly, while handily invigorating her album tunes with unique arrangements, she also steps out with daring covers. It's one thing to cover Bob Dylan. It's another to try Etta James. But it is definitely daring to stretch from those confines to a soulful send up of The Racontuers track, "Many Shades of Black," which she does with aplomb. But none of these is a misstep in her capable hands, and she knows it. And that's why she's so convincing.

Greatest Song At This Moment - Beck's "Timebomb"

<BR><BR>Turns out "Timebomb" has not only inspired this writer, but countless other video producers to create strange tributes to its glory. Many of these are simple dance videos and while they're not technically "unwatchable," they're probably more fun to watch if you know the kids involved, particularly if you gave birth to them. There are videos set to soccer games, mash-ups over "Gossip Girl" clips and old movie footage, and copious lip sync videos. But to really solve the mystery of this song's repeatability, I luckily found a video derived from the "subliminal messages" contained within when played backwards.

Dedicated to those songs that I can't stop playing, humming, or thinking about; the 4+ minutes you fall head-over-heels in love with. Past instances have included My Morning Jacket's "Evil Urges," Ronnie & The Daytona's "Little G.T.O.," and Tender Box's "Spectacular Spider-man Theme."

I have a post-concert habit: When I return home, I try to organize a playlist of all my album (a.k.a. "non-live") tracks in the same order I remember hearing them played live mere days, hours or minutes before. I usually have a couple missing bits here and there, but I can ballpark matters pretty well. It all helps me live squarely in the past - a wonderfully controlled and regulated past. It's cozy here with no crowd noise, no lines, no smells other than that of my own seclusion. Of course sometimes being won over by the band I've seen, I'm compelled to collect more of their work, even if I already have waaaaaaaaaay more than I need, and the missing chunks are from crappy albums. This is where iTunes and music downloading really save my bacon, and that's what they did for me after seeing Beck at Outside Lands by delivering "Timebomb."

Two minutes and fifty seconds of glorious pop juice oozed on August 22, 2008 to hypnotize me. Besides putting both its magical hands on my hips and moving me in a dirty fashion, the song commanded me. "Acquire this song. Play this song. Re-play this song."

While my writing <a href=http://thetripwire.com/news/2008/8/29/outside-lands-music-arts-festival-a-verbal-and-video-re-cap" target="new">my festival review and trying my best to recreate the concerts I'd just heard, I found I was missing this track in my personal collection. However, I'm not an impulse-buy kind of guy, even if the impulse would only cost me ninety-nine cents (that's nearly two candy bars). This is where YouTube comes in handiest. In a world waged in war against the cheapskate, YouTube is the sausage-on-the-stick at the grocery store. You can almost always count on at least one video with the song in question. For evidence, see nearly every single G.S.A.T.M. columns I've written, save one ("Guns on the Roof," which actually now has a video. I'm sure I had everything to do with it finally being produced, if you can call a still photo of the Clash a "produced" video. And I do).

Turns out "Timebomb" has not only inspired this writer, but countless other video producers to create strange tributes to its glory.

Now we're getting somewhere. Leave it to the never ending subliminal backwards message constituency to get to the heart of the matter. These guys should probably name themselves the "You Gotta Really Want To Hear It Group." And trust me, they REALLY want to hear it. I've been intrigued by the notion of Beck having subliminal messages ever since a friend joked that "Timebomb" had secret Scientology messages worked in, but this particular video makes a claim that Beck is really singing about Mars, and prophets, and cigarettes (which he sings about in the non-subliminal part, too. This repetition must be due to the fact that Beck really, really wants us to smoke cigarettes and he'll go to the trouble of recording the word forwards and backwards to get you to do it!). There's more stretching in these video's thesis than a first-baseman on a double play, with long passages being "deciphered" into phrases that make almost as little sense as the non-subliminal ones. And if that weren't enough, at the 1:35 mark, these particular code-cracking geniuses admit they can't figure out what's being backwardly said and write - I'm not kidding - "(Mumble mumble) on mars they are wise...." Seriously? "(Mumble mumble)?" You're entire theory is based on cracking "(Mumble mumble)" and you just write it in? Unfortunately, I still don't smoke, nor do I want to go to mars, nor do I mumble mumble, so the backwards-message angle feels like a dead end in solving the mystery of "Timebomb."

It feels like the true subliminal message of the song is in its simple popness, and I know I use that excuse a lot, but it's often the truth. There's really only so many ways you can make chocolate cake, and if you stick to the recipe it usually comes out pretty good anyway. There's a crunchy drum beat and a persistent (almost boring) electronic beep holding things in check. It's got repeatable lyrics which allow for easy singing back, as evidenced at Outside Lands. I hadn't heard the song more than four times, and it had been a few years. But I can pick it up pretty quick when you keep repeating "We got a time bomb" and "Na-nuh-na-nah" for a majority of the tune. The checkmate of the whole mix for me remains the cheerleader-style backing vocals, lending the kind of "join in" vibe we all remember from pep rallies.

And join in I do. Again and again. And as I've illustrated, others around the world have experienced this same strange compulsion, either by subliminal message, idle hands, or through some level of close encounter. Somehow this song about time bombs--not the dismantling or setting of time bombs, but just time bombs in general--compels as well as attracts. That's what art's supposed to do, and that's why it always scares those who don't understand it. They don't understand that none of us really understand it. We just seem cooler with watching videos of kids dressed in cardboard boxes dismantling actively-phoney time bombs than other people are.

NOTE: I'm not including the "official" video for the song, if there even is one. Instead I'm linking by far the most popular "homemade" video, which looks like paper cut-outs from someone named Hamcane. It's adorable and wonderful as it takes us through the many, many Becks we've experienced over the years, with my personal favorite being Midnite Vultures-era Beck doing the splits.

From the opening notes of the first song, “Victor Jara’s Hands” it becomes apparent that Calexico is back in top form. On their last album <i>Garden Ruin</i>, the band dabbled in more straightforward sun drenched California pop, and while the album was very good, it lacked the energy and diversity that has made Calexico’s sound so unique. From the opening notes of the first song, “Victor Jara’s Hands” it becomes apparent that Calexico is back in top form. On their last album Garden Ruin, the band dabbled in more straightforward sun drenched California pop, and while the album was very good, it lacked the energy and diversity that has made Calexico’s sound so unique. Conversely, Carried to Dust is a tour de force filled of worldly influences and moods, with subtle pedal steel guitars, full horn sections, and some Cumbia/Son-infused numbers.

The album is a sprawling cinematic voyage across border-town countries, in which enthusiastic numbers reminiscent of spaghetti western scores such as “El Gatillo” and dark moodier pieces like “Fractured Air” flow seamlessly into one another. Carried to Dust is completely driven by these climactic mood changes that make for a listening experience as fulfilling as watching a John Wayne movie on the silver screen.

Stand out songs include the mariachi horn laden opening number, “Victor Jara’s Hands”, which is about the poet murdered by Pinochet, whose name lived on as a symbol of artistic bravery and inspiration in Chile. “Writer’s Holidays” subtle acoustic strums, lyrical delivery and subdued background hums produce a spacious dusty number filled with beauty, while the gorgeous country duet “Slowness”, featuring Pieta Brown, is Calexico’s shining moment with it’s twangy slide guitar and melodic lyrical exchange that plays out like a perfect moment in ones life.

Calexico has definitely gotten their musical mojo back. This is the album that should have followed their classic Feast of Wire, but I guess late it is always better than never. Carried To Dust is a crowning achievement that is quite possibly Calexico’s best album to date.

<BR><BR>Maybe this guys was a mistaken, ugly Radiohead fan, but what's even more surprising than this on-stage attack of Noel is that brother Liam actually stuck up for him.

Maybe this guys was a mistaken, ugly Radiohead fan, but what's even more surprising than this on-stage attack of Noel is that brother Liam actually stuck up for him.

While performing "Morning Glory" - much to the delight of those in attendance at Toronto's 2008 Virgin Festival, a man suddenly appears on stage and, without warning, pushes an unsuspecting guitarist Noel Gallagher to the floor - seemingly also to the delight of those in attendance - causing a halt in the performance for several minutes. We don't want to ruin the surprise, but it happens right around the 1:30 mark of this clip. Once nerves and microphones were restored, the band resumed performing with "The Importance of Being Idle."

<BR><BR>As we mentioned to you a few weeks ago, An Albatross has opened the floodgates and started releasing details about their upcoming sophomore record, <i>The An Albatross Family Album</i>. The psych-metal pioneers' second official full-length - and first since 2006's <i>Blessphemy Of The Peace-Beast Feastgiver And The Bear Warp Kumite</i> - will see the light of day on October 21st via Eyeball Records. But aside from the newly-posted album version of their single "...And Now Emerges The Silver Pilgrim", which can be heard at the band's MySpace page, we have yet to hear any new music.<br><br>

Until now.
